This is a memorial to acknowledge the genocides which were committed by the Ethiopian forces.
To commemorate the struggle and pay tribute to the thousands of lives lost as a result.
WHY ONE WEEK?
To properly recognize the genocide that was committed and change the National psyche of the Eritrean People regarding the atrocities.
One day isn’t enough to fully encompass the gravity of the multiple massacres that were committed. The time span over which these atrocities are committed make it difficult to just remember them In one day.
The villages burnt and people were massacred. Hence, the reasons outlined above we choose a whole week to remember the lost lives and destroyed communities destroyed.
WHY THE END OF NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 1?
On December 1, 1970, the Ethiopian Army surrounded the village of Ona, killing civilians and burning down the village. This was one of the largest massacres that was committed against the people of Eritrea. The deaths were over 800+ ].
Memorial day will be held on December 1st, and the days leading up to December 1st will address the genocides that committed. (Detailed of the week outline- next few slides).
